Another new variation of the coronavirus seems to have arisen in Nigeria, Africa's top general wellbeing official said Thursday, however he added that further examination was required.  The disclosure could add to new alert in the pandemic after comparable variations were declared in the UK and South Africa, prompting the quick return of worldwide travel limitations and different estimates similarly as the world enters a significant Christmas season.  "It's a different genealogy from the UK and South Africa," the top of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, John Nkengasong, told journalists.  He said the Nigeria CDC and the African Center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases in that nation — Africa's generally crowded — will investigate more examples.  The alarm about the clear new variation depended on a few hereditary groupings, he stated, yet that and South Africa's alarm before the end of last week were sufficient to provoke a...

Hundreds of Nigerian students went missing after gunmen attacked a secondary school in the country's northwestern Katsina state, police said, while the president said the military was in gunfights with bandits in a forest as it tried to find the students. The Government Science Secondary School in Kankara was attacked on Friday night by a large group of bandits who shot “with AK-47 rifles,” Katsina State police spokesman Gambo Isah said in a statement. Police engaged the attackers “in a gunfight that gave (some of) the students the opportunity to scale the fence of the school and run for safety,” Isah said. About 400 students are missing, while 200 are accounted for, Isah said. The school is believed to have had more than 600 students. “The police, Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force are working closely with the school authorities to ascertain the actual number of the missing and/or kidnapped students,” said Isah. “Search parties are working with a view to find or rescue the missi...

A Chieftain of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in person of Dr Christian Opata declare that "the union’s rejection of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information Management System (IPPIS) has nothing to do with its current strike." Additionally, Opata, who is the Chairman of ASUU, University of Nigeria, Nsukka chapter, also mentioned this on Monday while addressing News-men on the protracted nationwide action.  According to him, he said the addressing was to correct the “misinformation” in a national daily, where it was alleged that the union embarked on its action because of IPPIS.  He also added, "ASUU went on strike because Federal Government failed to honour the 2009 agreement and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) it entered with ASUU." “ASUU didn’t go on strike because of a misunderstanding with government on IPPIS as platform for payment of salary.  Meanwhile, IPPIS issue began back in 2018. Then, ASUU has been calling on the attention of ...
